How to lock your lost iPhone using iCloud
If you can’t find your device, use Lost Mode right away to lock it and keep track of its location. If you have Family Sharing set up, you can turn on Lost Mode for family members’ devices, too. For more information, see the Apple Support article Family Sharing.
Lost Mode requires an iOS device that meets minimum system requirements. You can lock a Mac or iOS 5 device, but you can’t track it. If you lock a Mac, you can’t locate it if it’s not near a previously used Wi-Fi network, and you won’t be able to erase it remotely.
What is Lost Mode?
Lost Mode locks your device with a passcode so that others can’t access your personal information. When your device is in Lost Mode:
- You can display a custom message on the screen. For example, you may want to indicate that the device is lost or how to contact you.
- Your device doesn’t display alerts or make noise when you receive phone calls, messages, or notifications, or if any alarms go off.
- Find My iPhone attempts to suspend any credit or debit cards you have in Wallet for ApplePay, even if your iPhone is offline. For more information, see the Apple Support article Use Wallet on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
Turn on Lost Mode or lock a device
- 1. Go to Find My iPhone on iCloud.com.If you don’t see Find My iPhone on iCloud.com, your account just has access to iCloud web-only features. To gain access to other iCloud features, set up iCloud on your iOS device or Mac.
- 2. Click All Devices, then select the device you want to track or lock.
- 3. Click Lost Mode (iOS 6 or later), or Lock (iOS 5 or OS X v10.7.5 or later)
- 4. Follow the onscreen instructions, keeping the following in mind:If your iOS device has a passcode, that passcode is required to unlock the device. Otherwise, you’re asked to create a passcode now.If you’re trying to place a family member’s iOS device in Lost Mode, and the device doesn’t have a passcode set, that person’s Apple ID password must be entered on this computer.If you’re trying to lock a family member’s Mac, that person’s Apple ID password must be entered on this computer.If you’re asked to enter a phone number, enter a number where you can be reached. The number appears on the device’s Lock screen.If you’re asked to enter a message, you may want to indicate that the device is lost or how to contact you. The message appears on the device’s Lock screen.
Note: If you forget the passcode, or if you set an EFI firmware password on your Mac before it was lost, then lock it and later find it, you may need to take it to an authorized repair center to unlock it.
If you put your iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus in Lost Mode and you have credit and debit cards in Wallet for Apple Pay, Find My iPhone attempts to suspend your cards immediately, even if your iPhone is offline. To resume using your suspended credit and debit cards, turn off Lost Mode, then sign back in to iCloud. Track your device in Lost Mode
If you use Lost Mode, when tracking begins, you see your device’s current location, as well as any changes in its location on the map.
If your device is online when you put it in Lost Mode or lock it, it locks and tracking begins (if applicable). If Location Services is turned off on the device, it’s temporarily turned on to track your device’s location. A confirmation email is sent to your Apple ID email address.
If your device is offline, the passcode lock and tracking (if applicable) take effect the next time it’s online.
Lost Mode tracking on Find My iPhone map
- Turn off Lost Mode or change your contact infoYou can turn off Lost Mode by entering the passcode on the device, or by following the steps below. You can also follow the steps below to change the contact information displayed on your lost device.
Note: If your credit and debit cards for Apple Pay were suspended because you put your iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus in Lost Mode, when you turn off Lost Mode and sign back in to iCloud, you can resume using your cards.
- Go to Find My iPhone on iCloud.com.
If you don’t see Find My iPhone on iCloud.com, your account just has access to iCloud web-only features. To gain access to other iCloud features, set up iCloud on your iOS device or Mac.
- Click All Devices, then select the device that’s in Lost Mode.
- Click Lost Mode, then change the information or click Stop Lost Mode.

Remove credit and debit cards from Wallet (or Passbook)
- Go to Find My iPhone on iCloud.com.
