Apple will fix your MacBook’s worn-out display coating

The Retina display on your MacBook or MacBook Pro is supposed to look gorgeous. However, some owners have encountered just the opposite — the screen’s anti-reflective coating is wearing out quickly due to pressure or stains, leaving them with an unsightly laptop (and in some cases, a repair bill). Relief is in sight, though. MacRumors understands that Apple has quietly launched a program that will replace the screens on Retina-equipped MacBook and MacBook Pro models for free until either October 16th, 2016 or three years from when you bought your system, whichever is longer. You’ll get compensation if you’ve already had to pay for a fix. Apple reportedly [...]

Toshiba’s Surface-like DynaPad is coming to the US next year

Toshiba has unveiled the DynaPad, a 12-inch, Suface-pro like convertible that packs an exotic Wacom Active Electrostatics TruPen stylus. Microsoft revealed the news on its Windows blog, where it’s been keen to promote third-party Windows 10 hardware after launching its own Surface Book. Toshiba says the stylus’ 2,048 levels of pressure and specially coated 1,920 x 1,280 3:2 IPS screen help artists feel like they’re “writing on paper with a real pen.” However, the DynaPad’s performance may disappoint artists familiar with the Surface Pro, as it’s limited to a 1.44GHz Intel Atom CPU and 4GB of memory. In exchange for lightweight performance, [...]

Acer makes its new all-in-one portable by adding a battery

With the PC market dwindling and Microsoft itself now providing some of the best Windows 10 models (like the powerful Surface Book convertible), third-party OEMs have to do something to stand out. That’s perhaps why Acer has decided to put an internal battery in its 17.3-inch Aspire Z3-700 all-in-one (AIO) to make it more roadworthy. It’s not the first AIO to do this trick — Dell’s hybrid XPS 18 did it a couple years ago, and Lenovo’s 27-inch Horizon 2 takes the idea to the extreme. The Z3-700 is one of the lightest and longest lasting we’ve seen at 2-kilograms (4.4 pounds), though. That suggests it’s more a big tablet than an AIO, but Acer [...]

Microsoft’s Surface Book is its first (and ‘ultimate’) laptop

And then Microsoft dropped a bombshell on stage. “What if you wanted a Surface — but you wanted a laptop Surface, something with a bigger screen, something with the perfect typing experience of a laptop?” Microsoft’s Panos Panay asked at the company’s Windows 10 devices event. “We made the ultimate laptop; we made Surface Book.” That’s right, it’s Microsoft’s first in-house laptop — with a 267 ppi, 13.5-inch display, a sixth-generation Intel Core processor, up to 16GB of RAM and a claimed 12-hour battery life. Microsoft is calling it the “ultimate” laptop …but just like every other Surface in the [...]
